A Lenten Confession

God of setting out
and arrival
and of the road between
we lay down, with reverent attention
those things that we have taken up
to protect us
from You
and from one another.

We lay down the resentments we have tenderly nurtured
the coveting that has kept us from our truest self
our mistrust of love
our occasional or constant despair.

We lay them down tenderly
by the side of this Lenten road
on which we are asked to stay with You
to remain with You
trusting You
through all the questions
meant to live in us
those questions we sometimes try to escape.

Our laying down these things
is our confession, our bending toward freedom
from which we rise
with renewed intention
to follow You.

In Jesus’ name,  Amen.
