Laying Bare the Space

by Catherine Smith | Nov 29, 2025

What will you give up for Advent?

I know that is one of the questions traditionally tended in Lent but this year questions are shifting and turning around in me and the is one of them.  The other is what will Advent do in you?

Many of us have chosen from among the rich offerings to follow in Advent.  Sometimes we long for them.  Sometimes we follow in answer to the question asked of us by others or asked of us by that questioner within: What are you doing for Advent?

I feel summoned this year to pay particular attention to that other question. What Advent is doing in me?  Perhaps we need those sharp-edged apocalypse texts that arrive each Advent, those uncovering texts that lay bare the space within us, the virgin space where only the Holy can meet and move and make us.  The virgin space from which we will be born.  The virgin space in which we each become “mothers of God”.

What will you give up for Advent?   How will that something large or small that you relinquish untether you to rest within that deep, blue breathless space where you are birthed in Holiness?

Sometimes, especially in days full of doing, our body helps us to pause.

A Tiny Ritual for Making Space

Candle
Matches or lighter
A small pitcher filled with water
A small bowl

I know we light candles each week for Advent but what if at some time during the day, whatever seems best for you lit a candle?  What if you filled a small cream pitcher with water and once you had lit the candle, slowly poured water into the bowl?
What if you dipped your finger in that water and circling it slowly round your palm felt yourself into welcome
for the Love that is coming into the world?

What if at times during the day you touched your palm and remembered?

What will Advent do with you?
