Visio Divina

by Catherine Smith | Mar 25, 2015

A bowl of spicy curry with pieces of meat, possibly chicken, and visible herbs and spices in a rich, reddish-brown sauce invites mindful reflection, much like Visio Divina or contemplative prayer, photographed from above against a black background.

Know yourself now in the company of those who search mystery for meaning;
Imagine you are in this good company
And imagine that in this company you are also solitary
That you are private in this moment
That no one sees you but the Holy One or Mystery herself

Let your breathing be as it wants to be.
It enspirits all your body
And moves through thoughts and feelings.
Let your breath move lovingly through your body.

Now let your closed eyes open
And bring your gaze to the mosaic.

What first announces itself to you in the image?
It may seem jarring, or beautiful or mundane
It is your own
Welcome it
Resist the temptation to search for something better
Let the annunciation move through you carried by your breath

Where does it touch the fragments that have fallen out of integration?
What does it invite in?
What does it call you to let go?
What is the sound of your image?

Know yourself now in the company of those who search mystery for meaning;
Imagine you are in this good company
That this room is filled with sound and image
That the energy of this good company
And the breath that enspirits each of us and all of us
is set free for compassion in the world.

We conclude in gratitude.
